 One Hundred Million Missing Women

In India, China and sub-Saharan Africa, millions upon millions of women are missing. They are not lost, but dead: victims of violence, discrimination and neglect. Women who are dead because their lives were undervalued. picked by equinox 10 months ago

well ... are those countries satisfied with themselves, or are they b***hing about the lack of women? they killed off the women to get here; they don't have a right to complain about not having enough women to sell for pigs and babymaking.

on a different note ... i thought a dowery was paid by the man's family, to the woman's family, not the other way around. was that true for some culture somewhere at some point in time, or has it always been so for the woman's family to pay the man's family?

the human nature and evolution books i read ... the precious egg/cheap sperm situation ... this female deficiency doesn't make sense. why are women so worthless, to the point they get killed off like this? without them, you can't have any god damn children, shouldn't that count for something?

In the past, when there was a woman shortage, a man would just go to a neighboring village and kidnap and enslave someone. "Bride stealing" is still quite common in some areas, but the hunt is getting harder as there is less prey.

A dowry "goes with the wife" (ie is paid to the husband and his family) as a price of taking in the woman and raising her within their family. Originally, the wife was then cut off entirely from her family and expected to live with/work for the new husbands' family. He was being 'generous' by taking the food-eating woman out of the house and bringing her into his. The bride-price was compensation for this cost.
