High school cheerleaders banned from using Bible banners Posted: 2 months ago by suebe
A high school cheerleading squad is getting flak after parading religious banners at football games.

The Lakeview-Fort Oglethrope High School cheerleaders, of Georgia, have tried everything to get their team to win, including displaying football banners with such biblical verse as “commit to the lord” and “take charge of it,

I think what the team needed was a banner that said:

PRACTICE!

Wait... So, it is against the first amendment (includes free speech) to use a bible verse? Something doesn't add up...

Did an administrator, coach, teacher, or other faculty member make them do this?

If the answer is no, then this is not a violation of the First Amendment.

The first amendment is moot in this case, it's in a school. Free speech, freedom of religion, due process against search and seizure... none of those have any bearing when it comes to a school.

Whether they should or not is another discussion, courts have long upheld the belief that a school is a 'special situation' where the education of all the students comes before the rights of individuals.

Although, it is kinda sad that a bunch of girls in skimpy outfits is 'ok' but a bunch of girls in skimy outfits with a banner that is meant to inspire by using a 2000 year old text is taboo.

While you are 100% correct, I often wonder over the irony of having first ammendment rights voided in certain situations. It's a right or it isn't.

The thing I find funny about the situation is that they used the First Amendment to deny free speech. That's an argument that holds little water.

However, I am an absolutist when it comes to free speech, so that may effect my opinion.

Girls wearing cheerleader outfits has been considered acceptable wear, in most casual-dress venues in the US for quite some time. Acceptable dress for swimming has been considerably skimpier, for both sexes.

However, explicit endorsement of a particular religion on government-funded property, and at a government-funded function is another matter entirely.

And that is the entire point,

if i was on the football team, i would have taken a dump in midfield.

picked it up, and thrown it at their sign.

i dont need that "crap" when im trying to play some ball.

"commit to the lord"?

commit what?

who is the lord?

your lord aint my lord.

religion is ignorance about anything outside of the walls of their domain.

...and the earth was built in 7 days right?

uh yeah.

put your lord in your pipe and smoke it.

1. Tony it's ok to disagree. It's not ok to be a d**k about someone else's beliefs...particularly when they haven't attacked you first. You're a level 4, so I won't downvote you. Yet. Just be careful about what you say. (EDIT: In light of your following comment, I have changed my mind).

2. Stop plasturbating (upvoting yourself). It does no good and does not help your karma.

"Stories" can have powerful effects on people, look at any great literature and that is obvious.
Yes, it is a bunch of stories, but one can't say that these stories and the religion around them is purely evil or ignorant. There are millions of people who benefit from religion, and that simple fact can't be ignored.

Religion may or may not be a joke. That isn't the point.

By all means express yourself. Be true to your opinions and beliefs.

However express them, discuss them, and debate them in a civil adult matter.
