Oh my God, the president showed a foreign leader respect in the manner to which his culture is accustomed! That son of a b***h!

The commenters (commentators ?) are mostly thinking that the US should bow to no-one, thinking they own the world.
At this point in time, I'd say that the US is by no longer the most influential country in the world, in terms of economics and foreign policy. The dollar as dwindled and the Euro is gaining strength. Europe is getting it's act together, and will soon have a president (althought, unfortunately not a democratically elected one yet, but that will change with the European elections).
Anyhoo, Obama shows his diplomatic skills, something the previous president lacked.

It's been standard procedure for American presidents to treat the queen as the queen should be treated. Obama is merely extending this courtesy to other world leaders.
There's a disturbing trend among the polarized media to attack anything done by politicians from the "opposing parties."
News viewers are unaccustomed to this, because for many years, news was presented in a much less biased manner.

Will this man ever stop bowing and scraping to foreign leaders. What is wrong with him? Wait I know, he is a narcissistic, psychopath with delusions of grander and bent on destroying the United Sates of America as we once knew it: a free country.
So he wont stop groveling, yet he is a megalomaniac?
I love how he is both doing nothing, yet doing everything :/

It has always bothered me that our leaders did not afford the same respect they expect from visitors.
Glad to see we're headed in a new direction.
ETA - Wow! How did this statement warrant a DV? I'd love an explanation.

I'm shocked by the racism and ethnocentrism in some of these comments. One person even called Akihito a communist emperor!

..at least Obama didn't barf all over him like Bush did to the Japanese PM a couple years back.
I feel bad for Obama - he has to really try a lot harder to make up for all of Dub-ya's foreign shenanigans.

I will admit, although I am not a big "Obama" fan *cough* antichrist *cough* I have to admit I feel sorry for him. His wife forgets British etiquette and he's "completely unfamiliar with foreign policy", then he uses Japanese etiquette and he's submitting to another world leader. Guy can't win.

Even the NYT was appalled that a president would bow to an Emperor or King.
oh wait, that was Clinton who the NYT attacked.
I don't have a real problem with it. I do see it more as an example of Obama's ignorance of proper protocol due to his inexperience but nothing really awful. As far as bowing as per the custom of his host, his bow was quite far from a proper Japanese bow which again shows his ignorance due to his inexperience. Nothing negative about such ignorance, just a fact.
