Endangered: The Most Dangerous Bird on Earth
Endangered: The Most Dangerous Bird on Earth
The Southern Cassowary may not be as much of a household name as its cousins the Ostrich and the Emu, but even though it is classified as "only" the third largest bird on the planet it has a less welcome claim to fame. Take a look at officially the most dangerous bird on the planet. picked by AutumnLotus 9 months ago

What a gorgeous bird! I love how they look like they have special little bird boots or something. The colors on it are beyond amazing. :D

It reminds of a line from the beginning of Jurassic Park. Lessee now....

The boy in the beginning, at the dig site, says about the Raptor skeleton: "That's not very scary! More like a six foot turkey." I don't know about you, but I'd be terrified of a six foot turkey.

So yeah... a six foot painted turkey, in this case.

Gurp gurp gurp gurp.

I was watching a documentary about cassowaries just the other day.

Specifically in relation to the impact of the Cyclone Harry.

It had driven them out of their natural habitat and into towns and villages. Some of the locals welcomed them, but others were more wary, locking their doors and windows when the cassowary came a-wandering.

Teams of conservationists specialise in removing them from urban surroundings - a process that involves noosing them, pinning them down and then restraining them for transport.

With customary Australian directness one of the conservationists at one point explained the reason why they could not really exist in harmony with humans by pointing out a claw and saying "If he got a good kick in he could unzip a bloke."

The conservationists were wearing body armour.

It's interesting that something so fascinating can be so dangerous... kinda like some men my daughter knows. :O Halp?

To quote Hair:
I would just like to say
That it is my conviction
That longer hair and other flamboyant
Affectations
Of appearance are nothing more
Than the male emergence
From his drab camoflage
Into the gaudy plumage
That is the birthright of his sex.
There is a peculiar notion
That elegant plumage and fine feathers
Are not proper for the male
When ac---tually
That is the way things are
In most species

(except of course this one. :D)

During the mating ceremony it is the male who takes the passive role and the female can take up to three different mates contiguously. The final partner she attracts will be the one to rear the young. That's correct, after a month or so of courtship the female lays the clutch of eggs and removes herself from the scene. The hapless male is left to incubate the eggs and look after the young.
They missed discussing how smart the females are :)
