Running Shoes are a waste of money Posted: 5 months ago by icepigs
This is an old article (and a similar one to Bingo's post), but I've recently discovered barefoot running and am very interested.

I'm fascinated by this statement: "For the fun of it. One of [Tarahumara Indians] recently came first in a prestigious 100-mile race wearing nothing but a toga and sandals. He was 57 years old."

FOR THE FUN OF IT?????

Christopher McDougall (the author of this article) has written a book about barefoot running called "Born to Run". I ordered it from Amazon last week and should be at my house today. I plan on reading it immediately.

How are you liking your pair? I'm going to try some on this weekend, I think. I prefer barefoot for everything else, so I'm optimistic.

There was a story on the Sunday news program hubbin watches about barefoot runners, talked about the Tarahumara Indians, and a guy who runs barefoot in Central Park.

I ran 4 miles on Saturday in my VFFs. It is definitely a different way to run. My calves burned for 2 days.

But I'm VERY optimistic.

I suffered so many little "nagging" injuries while training for my marathon...I'm hoping this fixes those and allows me to try another marathon in the future...and cut off 30 minutes (or more) from my finishing time.

Keep me posted. :) I know someone who's learning to run again with them, and reporting much the same--interesting, muscle aches, but fewer joint pains.

If I can find some that fit me this weekend, I'll probably pick them up.

Around how much do they go for? I definitely want a pair. I go barefoot most of the day.

ack! the between-the-toes footwear thing is a big no for me. just can't do it. I don't mind being barefoot or even stocking-foot, but nothing between the toes ever!

Depending on which ones you get, they range for $50 to $150 each.

Ok guys, who here is a Tarahumara Indian?

Yeah, I didn't think so. These cats have many many generations of genes to go along with their practices.

Just be careful is all, and don't get suckered.

I own a pair of these shoes, and the are Awesome. I don't do serious running, but for hiking, boating, and any outdoor activity they are sweet.
