When the suspension on Rumen Petrov's Vectra gave up, instead of paying out the money for new springs he jammed some tennis balls in their place. Tennis balls. He trusted his life and those of others to some tennis balls where steel is normally prescribed. picked by pocksucket 6 months ago

My uncle used to use wire coat hangers to hold things down in his car engine. But tennis balls - wouldn't you need to replace them frequently? They do lose their bounce after a spell.

Considering that it was an Opal Vectra, the change probably actually improved safety, performance and handling.

Years ago, I had a friend who worked for the NY Dept of Motor Vehicles. He was one of the driving testers. He mentioned it was not unusual to have people arriving for their driving test with a tennis ball under the gas pedal. ???

He had some close calls during the tests over the years and had to retire early for stress related problems. :)

How did they spot the car? How did they know something was wrong?
