 Another Faith Healing Death
Another Faith Healing Death
Not long after Dale Neumann and his wife were convicted of the murder of their child through faith healing comes the story of Zachery Swezey who lay dying with a ruptured appendix whilst his parents prayed and preachers anointed him with oil

Washington's law specifies that a person treated through faith healing "by a duly accredited Christian Science practitioner in lieu of medical care is not considered deprived of medically necessary health care or abandoned." Other religions are not mentioned.
First of all what the hell is a "Christian Science practitioner"?!

Secondly "in lieu of" proper medical care is a ridiculous thing to say. It's that delay between seeking medical attention that caused this boys death.

I hope they rot in jail. The kid was not even a legal adult and as a responsible parent it is ones duty to make sure children are properly cared for...

Christian Scientist don't believe in doctors. In any way. God would take care of it if it is his will to do so.

So what they believed they were doing was saving his soul.

No, I don't agree with it, but that is what they believe. They believed they were taking proper care of him.

They are actually supposed to, according to Eddy's writings, and that's what pisses me off about cases like this, where the welfare of a child is turned into some distorted political statement.

From their own FAQ:

There is no biblical or church mandate to forgo medical intervention, nor do Christian Scientists believe that it’s God’s will that anyone suffer or die.

Okay, having now done some research on this it turns out that Christian Science has F*CK ALL to do with science.

In this case Peter Popoff is a top brain surgeon.

That is why as a society an example should be made of this group. It would be just as irresponsible to not point out that their views are ridiculous and harmful.

Holy crap

I never knew this was happening on such a large scale!

Even after losing five children, Faith Tabernacle members Dawn and Roger Winterborne continue to believe that message of healing through faith. The children, all younger than 2, died between 1971 and 1980 of cystic fibrosis, which can be treated to prolong life, often for years. Their sixth child, a 4-day-old girl, died in 1982 of pneumonia.

The couple never was prosecuted for treating their children with prayers.

"We still practice the same thing," Dawn Winterborne said. "We still believe the same way.

"They were sick," she said of her children. "There was no medical cure for them. God could have cured them, but that's neither here nor there."
Bold added by me

How the hell have these people never been prosecuted?!

CF is a treatable illness. The long-term prognosis isn't good but still a decent quality of life can be given with medical care.

Ready for a display of blistering logic (for any of those CS types who might be watching...)?

Parents: "Dear Lord please heal our child."

God: "Gladly. I will work through this doctor."

Parents: "Not good enough..."

I think you'll find that doctors spend many years studying medicine to be able to do what they do.

And that study is based on even more years of scientific research.

Of course. I agree completely with you, but was trying to look at it from their point of view, and decided that they just were not satisfied with the way in which their prayer could have been answered- by a highly trained medical doctor doing the best he can.

I just wanted to state that the "General Assembly and Church of the First Born" is in no way affiliated with "Christian Science" (LOL, oxymoron?) and so is exempt to the Washington State law that you have quoted. These people are prosecutable, and they can and should be prosecuted. I have made every effort to bring this story to the forefront in the last few months and it was due to a very few of us speaking loud and clear that the Wenatchee World went to court in order to obtain these records. We can make a difference.

It would be even more of a shame if Zakk died without anyone loudly advocating for him.
