I'll try again, I really do want to get away from Windows.

Thanks for the info.
Sounds like you just need something to burn the ISO file with, the download in the guide should work. I don't do much using windows outside of work, and have always used nero for such tasks, but it's basically an image of a CD, you have to write it to the CD using specific software rather than writing a CD with that file on. I don't think Windows is able to handle it by default.

yell if I can offer any further assistance; I'll see what I can do.

I guess mounting the ISO to a virtual drive wouldn't work when installing a new OS, would it?

I have Nero on my computer.. I'll give that a try this evening when I get home from work.

Thanks again.

I need a TV geek!

I'm going to be shopping for a new TV in the next couple of weeks, and I just want someone with more gadgety experience to let me know if I'm spending my money wisely.

This is what I'm looking to buy.

Also, I'm hoping to move in the next 6-12 months. Should I spend the extra money to get the set wall mounted, or just wait until I get into my new place?

HDTV, RowanGrey.

When we went shopping for a new High Def TV we could have gotten the Visio for the same price as the Sony but a little bit larger screen. In the end we went with the smaller screened Sony (32") since it had a significantly better picture quality. Compare prices and most places will match the price from competitors. Don't get fooled by the cheaply priced HDTV's. Compare them side by side with the name brands and you will see why you get better bang for the buck when you go with a Sony or other higher priced sets. You wont be sorry.

Here's my problem, though... you can't compare picture quality in-store (or so I've repeatedly been told) because of how wonky they've got the settings, the craptastic lighting, etc. So am I just comparing specs?

No, you can compare. Ask to use the remotes for each set and you'll be able to tinker with the settings. It'll also let you see how comfortable you feel with each HDTV's interface. I also have to agree with lark, I'd much rather go with a quality set, they tend to have much richer and broader range of color than the cheaper ones.

Main things to know.

1. Do Not Buy Anything That Says HD Ready

Means it's not proper HD. 420p counts as HD Ready. This is not the real deal. Some sets that are marked HD Ready do have higher resolutions but usually it's only 720i.

Unless it states specifically that it will do 1080p, walk away. You will eventually regret it if you buy it.

2. There are a very small number of panel manufacturers compared to brands. So building on what Lark says, you will see a difference between an LG and a Technika you'll not see any difference at all between LG and Samsung as it's the same kit with a different badge on it.

Beyond that, the best you can get in black ratio and response times should probably be a factor.

Earlier in the year I did a lot of research and LG/Samsung were at the time top of the heap (without getting into insane money).

How far did you get?

If you still need to burn the ISO from within Windows then ImgBurn is the best bit of Windows software for that task.

Just in general continuance of the conversation, for almost every thing you can conceive of, Linux is easier than Windows. Where people come unstuck is in thinking that it will be the same. It's not.

Ubuntu is quite a long way from any flavour of Windows. There are ones that are much closer; MS Linux, Linux XP, etc. if you want that safety net.

It is, however, fairly intuitive. Once you get use to the differences you'll find it to be a fairly straightforward OS, with nothing hard to find and the things that you need the most right there where you can get at them.

I hadn't got back to the project till yesterday. I did end up using ImgBurn to make the disk and it did the job on the first try.

I played around with the live disk and really don't see why Ubuntu wouldn't serve my purposes.

I'll probably look at some of the other versions of Linux before I make any final decisions as what OS I'll use when I finally ditch MS.

Thanks for asking.

Handy little tip (or way too much info at this stage) is that you can create partitions for any of the root directories. If you install a new distro then you just tell the installer how to mount that partition.

Which might not make much sense at this stage, but there's a directory called /home which is roughly equivalent to your My Documents folder. If you make that a partition of its own then you can leave that, and it's contents alone if you choose to intall a new distro.

Neat, huh?

Rowan, a geek friend of mine turned me on to for all my HDTV hunting, earlier this year.

Here's a thread, , about the particular TV you are looking at. If you search for it under the Google Search AVS, at the top of the page, it will bring up multiple threads, I'm sure.

I spend 2 months searching reviews, going to stores, ect, before settling on a Samsung rear projection HDTV. They are slowly phasing them out, but it worked for what I needed, and I could the get the same size that would cost 50-100% more if it was a plasma or LCD.

Also, after I got the television, I returned to the AVS forums, found a thread on my particular TV, and was able to calibrate it myself through other's suggestions and trial and error, plus learn about an update for my model that corrected a bug that would cause the TV to occasionally restart. Without it, I'd have gone insane trying to figure out what was causing it. You'll find a wealth of information there, on all kinds of electronics.

So Firefox 3 is giving me some trouble.

Ever since it updated, I can't post here, I can't edit, and I can't PM. I can access every other part of the site, but whenever I click "Submit" the whole thing freezes up.

I'm able to post this now only because I'm using the dreaded IE (a program I've happily avoided using for the last three years).

I've uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox twice. No go.

Suggestions?

Uninstall, re-download direct from mozilla and reinstall.

otherwise look at your list of add-ons, disable them all and see if the problem goes away, there may be an update to one of them needed.. if that solves the problem, re-enable them one at a time to find the culprit, and then check for an update or replacement for it; chances are it might not be 100% with the latest FF.

No go.

After disabling EVERYTHING, I completely uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled directly from the website. Twice. I also uninstalled/reinstalled Java and Flash. They're the only two things enabled at the moment (and neither of them is the problem). Still can't post, edit, or PM except via IE and mental telepathy.

My gorgeous, lovely wifey bought me THIS for my birthday last weekend. Absolutely superb quality especially with HD and even a regular scart connection with regular Sky Tv is great quality on it. Bluray is especially good on it.

I'd initially wanted a plasma but the LCD doesn't risk screen burn ect any lighting conditions. Also perfect picture on any angle.

I'd recommend it to anyone.
